Microsoft | Sofware | How to Open the Start Screen and Boot to the Desktop in Windows 8.1 | Windows 8 proved to be something of a disappointment for one reason or another. Windows 8.1 (or Windows Blue) was released to address the many problems users have complained about including reintroducing the ability to boot directly to the desktop.

Able to boot to the desktop instead of the Start screen is something that people have been clammering for since the first preview version of Windows 8 is unveiled. There are a variety of third-party tools released as many workarounds used to get around the problem, but now it is an option that is built directly into the operating system.

You must have downloaded and installed the update in order to continue, but once you do this, things are very simple.

If you have Windows up and running after the upgrade, right-click an empty part of the taskbar and select properties to open the newly named "Taskbar and Navigation properties" dialog. Move to the navigation tab and look at the screen "Start" at the bottom of the dialog. Check the box labeled 'Go to the desktop not Start when i come in "and click OK.

Once this has been completed, you will no longer have to take any additional steps or rely on additional software to reach the desktop, it will be automatically taken care of so that you can get and do whatever you want to do.

That's all there is to it, is very simple arrangement would have eased some disruption caused Windows 8 for many people.
