How to Change the Drive Name in Windows

Microsoft | Sofware | How to Change the Drive Name in Windows | You can change the name of the drive on the hard drive, flash drive or CD / DVD drive with the name you want. To do this tutorial you must be logged on as an administrator or a user with the ability to use the same.


Method 1: Change the Drive Name in Windows - autorun.inf

You can use the autorun.inf file to change the name of the drive, this way you can also change the name of the drive on an external hard drive. But you have to show file extensions in Windows Explorer.

First right click on the drive you want to change the name, select New and Text Document. Give the name of the file autorun.inf and press Enter.

Then open the autorun.inf file and enter the following command:

[autorun]
label = "name the new drive"

Then click File and Save, then exit the file autorun.inf.

Last Restart your computer and you will see the name of the drive will be changed. If you change the name of an external hard drive, just unplug the power cord and plug it again then it will change the name of the hard drive.

Do not forget to delete the autorun.inf file when it renames the drive.

Method 2 : Renaming Drive in Windows - Windows Explorer

First, open Windows Explorer and click Computer to view all active drive.

Then right-click on the drive you want to change its name and click rename.

Type the name you want to drive you.

Now you will see the name of the drive will be changed.


Method 3 : Renaming Drive in Windows - Disk Management

First, open Windows Explorer, right-click on Computer and select Manage. Or open the Windows Run (Win + R) and type compmgmt.msc or diskmgmt.msc.

Once the Disk Management window opens, right-click the drive you want to change its name and select Properties.

On the General tab, type the name of the new drive that you want, and click OK Appy.
