Microsoft | Sofware | Windows 8.1 Features And Changes Microsoft | Late last month, Microsoft officially took the wraps off Windows 8.1 by detailing some of the features and changes. Today at BUILD, a new feature was announced, below we look at some of the new features (and old) that Microsoft discussed at their annual developer conference.
Start Button
Undoubtedly the biggest, or at least the most publicized changes is the return of the Start button. While both large and fairly inconsequential at the same time, bring back to the Windows Start button will no doubt appease many die hard fans of the platform. We never really missed that much - pressing the Windows key on the keyboard launches the Start screen, such as buttons will do now - but we love the nostalgic look back.
Put Show in Windows 8.1
In addition to the Start button, Microsoft is also changing the way the window works snapping. Windows 8 has the ability to take two applications side-by-side on the screen, in 8.1, Microsoft has gone one step further by removing the two-app limit. Now, you can have up to 4 applications at once vertical snaps while not wasting all that valuable screen real estate. You can now also drag to resize the application to your liking when two applications side by side snaps. This may not seem like much in the face of it, but heavy multitaskers and would love to see the addition.
SkyDrive
In a form of integration that we have to wonder how much iCloud will tie into OS X Mavericks, Microsoft has baked more prominent SkyDrive into Windows 8.1.
Photos App
Many of the other additions to Windows 8.1 came in the form of changes to existing applications. Windows 8.1 Photos app now makes image editing experience better than ever before, usually with better results, too. Selective focus effects and can be applied, as well as all the usual features of tweaking the image that we have all come to expect from such application.
More Personalization Options in the Start Screen
Start screen in Windows 8 gets stale very quickly from time to time, and now, Microsoft is taking things a tad more serious personalization. With support for wallpaper, background more dynamic in modern Start screen, Windows 8.1 is now eye candy straight from the box.
A Better On-Screen Keyboard
Love it or hate it, but Windows 8 is launched with an idea in mind that many people will use it on a touchscreen device. The input method is very important here, and Windows 8.1 on-screen keyboard which is much more intelligent, and far more comfortable to use. In the on-screen keyboard is now more user-friendly and allows you to choose from those suggested by simply swiping on the soft key space. Talk about luxury, right?
Windows Store
The process of getting the new application also changed thanks to a redesign of the Windows Store. Now, graphs such as 'Top Paid' apps that look right off the bat, and a new recommendation engine will offer applications that Microsoft thinks you might like based on the particular application you're looking at at the time. Improve app discovery is something of a Holy Grail for any app store, and Microsoft is clearly working on improving the Windows Store.
Universal Search
In Windows 8, the search was broken down by application or web. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft has introduced universal search works much like Apple's Spotlight found in OS X.
Original 3D Printing API
Windows OS 8.1 to be the first to add native support for 3D printing. If you are willing to chug out a few thousand dollars for a 3D printer, you can be sure that Windows 8.1 will print your 3D accessories, or pretty much anything in terms of native. This is a very cool feature and we are confident that it will take off, as long as the cost of 3D printers down.
Improved Xbox Music And Bing Apps
New Xbox Music apps for Windows 8.1 is much more powerful than ever and plays well with Microsoft's recently announced gaming, Xbox One. With search built right in, you can now get your music in a faster way. Improved Management Collection means you can access your cloud music in a smooth manner. Also introduced Xbox Music Radio, which lets you find and streaming radio stations with the most seamless way. Xbox Music comes with a number of other new features that are sure to appease users who really dig their music.
Bing getting good repair, and are now stronger than ever. Bing is a good example of how Microsoft is taking the search seriously, and provide new applications in a lot of promise. Looking now more simple and seamless. Bing introduced a new application more attractive feature that lets you use the Bing app completely hands-free in the kitchen using air movement. Imagine Minority Report to make things clearer for yourself.
Support for High-Res Displays
Windows 8.1 takes things up a notch with the introduction of support for high-resolution display, Retina display monitor or as we like to call it here at Redmond Pie. This is a great feature, and we can not wait to give it a spin after we get our hands on a 4K monitor in the future.
Touch-Based Office Applications
Office parties are also embracing touchscreen and Microsoft revealed today at BUILD that a touch-based version of Office on the way for those who prefer to work on their Office documents using the touchscreen display. In touch-based Office applications will be available in 2014, with no exact release date given. The new version of Office will be available for download through the Windows Store.
new API
A developer conference would not be complete without the introduction of the API, and Microsoft has certainly delivered with Windows 8.1. With now more than 5,000 new APIs, Windows 8.1 opens the door for developers to new possibilities with apps and accessories alike. You can download the Preview Download Visual Studio 2013 and. NET 4.5.1 Preview and start building apps for Windows 8.1 now.
A message Making Out (At Last)
Remember pesky messages app in Windows 8? Yup, the same that almost did not work, now lost in Windows 8.1. We can not say if we are happy with that decision, but now it has gone in 8.1.
Original Optical Character Recognition
Optical character recognition has made its way to 8.1, too. Something that requires a third party application, is now a native part of Windows 8.1.
Internet Explorer 11
Internet Explorer 11 also got some stage time, and now supports a number of new features. With support for WebGL and MPEG Dash, Microsoft is doing all he can to take the crown from a third party browsers like Chrome, Firefox, etc. and want a piece of pie sweet web browsing.
Maps Go 3D
In the Maps application on Windows 8.1 will be 3D, a bandwagon that everyone jumped on lately. The cities that will be covered by the new Maps app has not been mentioned, but it's a good thing to see how Microsoft's Bing Maps take seriously this time.
native Mail app also get a good update. Mail now allows you to delete multiple mails from the same sender without having to select each email individually. In addition, there are other tweaks that make the Mail app worth having on your Start screen as your daily driver, so if you choose to.
Obviously there is a whole raft of new features and changes to existing ones, but with a short click through some of them, we believe the point is getting across loud and clear. Windows 8.1 make a real change, and we suspect the people will love them.
Preview download Windows 8.1 is available today and you can test drive on your PC as we speak.
