Microsoft | Sofware | Download eBay Exact For iPhone | eBay Exact For iOS Lets You Order 3D Printed Products Right From Your iPhone, not every day that a company like eBay launched a new application, especially because it has apps on all major platforms and apart from the odd redesign here and there, no need for each additional application. Or is there?
Today eBay has launched a new iPhone app called Exact eBay. Available for download from the App Store now, and costs you nothing, new applications are not really eBay as we know it. In fact, it's all very interesting indeed.
Instead of playing host to a mind boggling number of auctions for things that really are not that big, actually Exact eBay is a place where people can choose, and then adjust, the item will be made through 3D printing. Various companies like Makerbot and Sculpteo are the people who make these products, and we assume eBay will take a cut for their part in the transaction. Unfortunately, as far as we know, while the application can be downloaded in the whole world, it appears that the product can only be shipped to the U.S. and Canada only, and nowhere else. Booooo!
Actually rather interesting choice. There are iPhone cases, small ornaments and jewelry for all kinds of tastes, and because they were printed, they can be customized. It was kind of a big selling point here, so if you want an iPhone case with your name on the back, or a model with your face on it, then you will love the Exact eBay. Assuming you live in the right country, of course.
This move by eBay may be the first attempt to make 3D printing mode the main thing, and it definitely will highlight the technology to another group of people will not know it's there. That being said, we wonder if they are going to care how their goods are made, as long as they can add their own personal touch to them.
And really, who can blame them?
