Microsoft | Sofware | How to Make a DOS Bootable USB Drive | DOS is not used anymore, but you would not know if from reading the instructions written by the manufacturer to update the BIOS, firmware update utility and other tools of low-level system. They will often ask you to boot into DOS and run the utility.

We once our formatted floppy disk with MS-DOS format using the utility built into Windows, but most computers do not have floppy disk drives anymore. They may not even have an optical disc drive!
using Rufus

Windows will not allow you to select the option "Create an MS-DOS startup disk" when formatting the USB drive-it gray. We will use Rufus otherwise. It is a fast application, which includes a light FreeDOS.

Rufus download and run it. Rufus does not require installation-you will see Rufus application as soon as you run the file. Exe download.

Creating a bootable USB drive with a simple DOS:

Connect your USB drive into your computer and select the device.
Make sure the check box "Create a bootable disk use" is enabled and ensure FreeDOS selected. (Rufus including FreeDOS, so you do not need to download anything else.)
Click the Start button. This will delete the contents of your USB drive! Backing up important files on the USB drive first.

This should be the default option, so you may not even need to configure Rufus at all. The process should be very fast-it took five seconds on our system.
Copy your files over

You may have made this a boot drive because you have to run a DOS-based program, such as the BIOS update utility or other program low-level system. To actually run these files from DOS, you'll need to copy it over to your USB drive. For example, you may have BIOS.BIN and FLASHBIOS.BAT files you need to run in DOS. Copy this file to the root directory of a USB drive after formatting it.

Boot to DOS

You are now able to boot to DOS by restarting your computer. If your computer does not automatically boot from the USB drive, you may need to change your boot order or use the boot menu to select the device you want to boot.

Once you are in DOS, you can run a program that you copied to your USB drive by typing its name at the DOS prompt. Follow any instructions provided in the manufacturer documentation to run the application.
