Microsoft | Sofwar | How to Access Windows Remote Desktop Over the Internet | By default, Windows Remote Desktop will only work on your local network. To access the Remote Desktop via the Internet, you will need to use a VPN or port in your router forward.
Before you proceed, enable Remote Desktop on your computer and make sure you can access it from other computers on your local network.
Set Up a VPN
If you create a virtual private network (VPN), you do not need to expose the Remote Desktop server directly to the Internet. Instead, you must first join your computer to the VPN. Remote computer will act as if it were part of the same local network as the computer running the Remote Desktop server. This will allow you to access Remote Desktop and other services only exposed on your local network.
There are a number of VPN application that you can use to create your own VPN, you configure the server from the complex by hand for an easy-to-use graphical applications. Once you have created an account, you can log into Hamachi on another computer and join the computer to the same second "Hamachi network." They will act as if they were connected directly, even if you do this over the Internet.
You can now use the Remote Desktop Connection application on your computer to connect to the Remote Desktop server. Using IPv4 address of the other computer, which is displayed in the Hamachi window while you are connected.
Forward TCP port 3389
You can also jump VPN and Remote Desktop server exposed directly to the Internet. If you do, make sure you have a strong password which is set on your computer. You do not want the bad guys who break into computers remotely.
We will go through the process quickly here. For more help, read the in-depth guide to port forwarding. If you follow the guide, make sure you forward TCP port 3389 to the computer running Remote Desktop.
First, find the IP address of the computer running Remote Desktop. On computers running Remote Desktop, open the Control Panel, click View network status and tasks, and click the name of your current connection to the right connections. Click on the details button and record the number on the right of IPv4 addresses.
Furthermore, access your router's web interface. If you do not know her address, this may be the same as the address of "IPv4 Default Gateway" in the windows network connection details. Plug the address into the address bar of a web browser to access the router's web interface.
Log in to the router and the Search for Port Forwarding section. Forward port 3389 TCP IPv4 address you are before.
Now you can log in to the Remote Desktop over the Internet-connect to your external IP address, also known as the public IP address.
If you have forwarded port, you may want to set up a dynamic DNS service so you can always be connected, even if your network IP address changes. You may also want to set a static IP address on the computer that is running the Remote Desktop server. This will ensure that the internal IP address of the computer is not going to change-if not, you should change your port forwarding configuration.
